The Crew Members 

This page will consist of all the crew members aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle. 

Christa McAuliffe

Sharon Christa McAuliffe was a teacher at Concord High School in New Hampshire. She taught there for fifteen years before hearing about the Teacher-In-Space Progam in a newspaper article. She had two children, Scott and Caroline Corrigan. She was married to Steven J. McAuliffe who died in 1986, the same year as the explosion. Her body was later buried at Calvery Cemetary in Concord. 

Gregory Jarvis 

Gregory Bruce Jarvis was one of the Specialists of the Challenger crew. He and Christa McAuliffe got along very well. He was born in Michigan in the city of Detroit. He was also in the United States Air Force. He entered the Air Force in 1969, which then he was forwarded to be in the Space Division in El Segundo in California. Jarvis would then become a Communications Payload Engineer Officer. There, he worked on designing Communication Satellites. He was then discharged from the Air Force. He helped with many spacecraft tests and system applications. After he died in the Challenger Explosion, he recieved the Congressional Medal of Honor. When the Crew Compartment part of the ship was found, Gregory Jarvis's body was cremated and his ashes were sprinkled over the Pacific Ocean. 


Mike Smith 

Michael John Smith was born of April 30th, 1945. He was the Pilot and Captain of the Challenger Space Shuttle. He was also a U.S. Navy Captain. She grew up in Beaufort South Carolina. He was born on April 30th, 1945. His parents were Robert Louis Smith, and Lucille (Safrit) Smith. When he was aboard the Challenger, he was 40 years old. He went to test pilot school. 


Judith Resnik 

Judy A. Resnik was born on April 5th, 1949, in Akron Ohio. She graduated from Firestone High School in Akron in the year 1966. She went to Carnegie-Mellon University and received a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in the year 1970. She also received a doctorate in electrical engineering in the year 1977 from the University of Maryland. ​​​​​​​She was recruited into the space program by Nichelle Nichols, an actor from the Star Trek televison series. She first went aboard the Discovery Space Shuttle in 1984. She became the second American woman to go to outer space. Sadly, the Challenger would be the second, and last, space mission that she would go on. After the event, her body was buried at the Arlington National Cemetary in Virginia. Her family members sued the makers of the O-Rings and blamed them for her death. 

Ellison Onizuka 

Ellison Shoji Onizuka was a Japanese American Astronaut who went into space. He lived in Hawaii and he was born on June 24th, 1946. He had one younger brother named Claude and two older sisters whose names were Norma and Shirley. He was a Boy Scout and became an Eagle Scout. He also participated in 4H activities. He went to Konawaena High School in Kealakekua and graduated in the year 1964. When he graduated from college in 1969, he received a Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering and a Master's degree in December of 1969. Then, on June 7th, 1969, he got married to Lorna Leiko Yoshida in the middle of when he was studying at the University of Colorado. They had two daughters, in 1969, Zoe Spears, and in 1975 Darien Lei Shizue. He was also a Test Pilot for the United States Air Force.


Ron McNair 

Ronald Erwin McNair's birthday was on October 21st, 1950. He was born in South Carolina in a Lake City. He wanted to become a scientist when he was a boy. He graduated from A&T University in North Carolina with a Bacoler of Science degree in phisics in the year 1971. He continued his education in many other places and earned the name, Dr. McNair. He also played the saxophone and had a 5th degree black belt in karate. When he was aboard the Challenger, that was his second space mission that he's been on. 


Dick Scobee 

Fransis (Dick) Richard Scobee, was another one of the Crew Members aboard the Challenger when it exploded. He was the Commander and the Other Pilot of the Challenger space shuttle. He was born on May 19th, 1936 in Cle Elum, Washington. He was 46 years old when he died on the Challenger Mission. In the year, 1957, he signed up to be in the United States Air Force. He was also an Engine Mechanic. He went to college when he could and eventually, in the year 1965, he recieved a Bachleor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Also in 1965 he was made an officer and went to flight school. He earned his wings when he was a combat aviator during the Vietnam War in 1966. In 1972, Scobee graduated from flight school and became a test pilot for many occasions. He was picked by NASA in 1978 for their training program. He became an instructor for the 747 carrier and waited a while for his time to come where he could go into space. In April of 1984, Scobee went with the Challenger to to release satellites and repair some of them. That mission was a success and Scobee then became the commander of the Challenger. He adventually married Virginia June Kent. He had two children with her. Their daughter Kathie R. Fulgham, and their son, Richard W. Scobee. His body was buried at Alrington National Cemetary. He was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 2004 and was entered into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
